Bubble Wrap – Painting with Feet

Bubble wrap is the best kind of fun!! We got a new washing machine delivered and what else would you do with the wrappings than use it!

You need: 

  • Bubble wrap
  • Fingerpaints
  • Something to put under and on the sides of the plastic sheet of bubble wrap 
  • Washing station

We managed to get three good sized pieces of the bubblewrap, so we split the group of 19 children into three. We put the bubblewrap on the floor surrounded by tablecloths and a washing station in the end.

Most of the group were playing in the next room. We invited one group of 6 kids at a time to the room with the bubble wrap, asked them to take off their socks and shoes and pull up their pant sleeves. We then asked the kids to stand all around the plastic and then asked them to choose a colour one at a time. I took the fingerpaint of their chosen colour with a spoon and dropped two splodges on the bubble wrap, one for each foot. Then I advised the children to step on the paint; ‘one and two’. Oh their little faces when they stepped on the paint! Such fun!  

This activity is so giving, it’s wonderful to do. The kids are so focused to begin with, just feeling the paint and the bubble wrap under their feet getting lots of sensory experience. They get to try mark making and pattern creation with their feet and enjoy themselves getting messy. Once there is more and more paint on, the plastic starts getting slippery. The kids have to balance themselves and be more mindful of their movements as they continue painting with their feet. 

Finally when finished it’s the dreary bit of cleaning up. We ask the kids to first get in the tub with soap and water and then into the one with just water. Dry their feet and get socks and shoes back on. 

Tips: 

Remember that not all children are brave the same way. I designed the activity on purpose so that only one child at a time steps on the plastic. This way I had the opportunity to see their reaction and respond to it. Some kids stepped fearlessly on the paint and enjoyed the squishy feeling of the paint spreading under their feet. Others were more hesitant and needed more time to be comfortable. Holding their hand I encouraged them to go ahead and do it slowly at their own pace. It is important that at this stage the child feels safe and has the opportunity to say no and/or to take their time.

Portrait of a Friend

We had spoken about faces and facial features with the kids for a few weeks already before making this craft. They had already named all the parts of the face and were eager to point them out on their own, their friends’ and their teachers’ faces. We had looked in the mirror a lot and had wondered about the different skin, hair and eye colours marvelling how we are all different and yet all very similar!

In this craft the goal was to paint a portrait of a friend. We paired the children randomly as it ever so often happens that when you have good friends working together, it does end in giggles and silly business rather than focusing on the task at hand 😉

You need: 

  • A4 cardstock, cut into about 3cm strips long way
  • Cellophane
  • Paints (hair, eye and skin colour, mouth, clothes etc.)
  • Cotton swabs 
  • Stapler 
  • Glue

Prepare: 

At least a day ahead of the craft, make the frames. Staple the stips into a rectangle and glue on a fitting sized piece of cellophane. You can also glue the frame together, but it was easier to staple and then glue on the cellophane in one go. I found it better to glue the cellophane to the frame as that made the frame more sturdy. 

Tips: 

Tape the frame to a window at a suitable height to the child. We had our kids sitting down as that way they stayed still better. Especially the model, who did get restless at times. In our classroom we have small windows, so we managed to get three pairs working at the same time side by side. I put the selection of paints into an ice cube form and put a cotton swab into each colour. The frame is quite small therefore the cotton swab is a good sized tool. I didn’t want the paints to get mixed in this craft, which is why the ice cube form with individual cotton swabs is a good palette to use. 

Painting: 

Tell the kids in their pairs that one is the painter and one is the model. Let the painter choose a frame in their favourite colour and show them the paints. Tape the frame to the window and ask the model child to sit down, look through the frame and sit as still as possible. Ask the painter child to observe their model; what colour are their hair, eyes and skin? Are they happy, sad or something else? (Of course at this point the child behind the window has already shown all kinds of faces, licked the window and drew pictures on it with their finger…). When the painter has observed enough they can start. It’s charming to see how the model child at this point calms down and starts sort of enjoying being the model. They follow as their friend makes strokes with the paint making their portrait and cheers them on as their work progresses. Since the model child is on the other side of the window, the painter can’t quite hear all the instructions that the model is giving – this way each child gets the opportunity to focus on their own work!

Olimme lasten kanssa puhuneet kasvoista, ilmeistä ja nimenneet kaikki kasvojen osat ennen tämän askartelun aloitusta. Lapset olivat jo muutaman päivän varsin innoissaan osoitelleet toisiaan ja opettajiaan nimeten eri kasvojen osia. Olimme katselleet itsejämme peilistä ja pohtineet kaikkien silmien, hiusten ja ihon väriä, ihastellen kuinka olemme kaikki erilaisia mutta silti kaikki samanlaisia!

Tässä askartelussa tavoitteena oli maalata muotokuva ystävästä. Valitsimme parit hatusta, koska kokemuksen perusteella usein käy niin että hyvien ystävien yhteistyö menee kikatteluksi ja hassutteluksi. Pyrimme siis pitämään lasten ajatukset tehtävässä valitsemalla heille parit joiden kanssa he eivät aina leiki 😉

Tarvitset: 

  • A4 kartonkeja, leikkaa niistä noin 3 cm suikaleita pituussuunnassa
  • Sellofaania 
  • Maaleja (ihon-, silmien- ja hiusten värisiä, sekä suu ja vaatteet)
  • Vanupuikkoja
  • Nitoja
  • Liimaa

Valmistelu: 

Ainakin päivää ennen askartelua: Nido kartonki suikaleista suorakulmaiset kehykset ja liimaa siihen sellofaanista sopivan kokoinen suorakulmio. Voit myös liimata kehyksen kulmat yhteen. Sellofaanin voisi myös teipata läpinäkyvällä teipillä, mutta mielestäni liimaaminen oli helpompaa, ja teki kehyksestä tukevamman. 

Vinkkejä:

Teippaa kehys ikkunaan lapselle sopivalle korkeudelle. Yksi lyhyt pala teippiä riitti pitämään kehyksen paikoillaan. Meidän lapset istuivat, koska tällä tavalla maalattava pysyy paremmin paikoillaan. Luokassamme ovat ikkunat ovat melko pieniä, joten saimme näppärästi kolme paria työskentelemään samaan aikaan, jokainen omalla ikkunallaan. Laitoin maalit jääpalamuottiin ja annoin maalaustyökaluiksi vanupuikon jokaiseen maaliin. Kehys on aika pieni, joten vanupuikko on sopivan kokoinen työkalu. Jääpalamuotti on 3-4 -vuotiaille hyvä paletti, koska tässä askartelussa halusin pitää värit erillään. 

Maalaus: 

Anna lapsen valita haluamansa värinen kehys ja teippaa se ikkunaan. Ohjaa lapset istumaan, yksi on taiteilija ja toinen on malli. Näytä maalaajalle työkalut ja pyydä mallia istumaan niin liikkumatta paikoillaan kuin he pystyvät. Pyydä sitten maalaaja-lasta tarkastelemaan ystäväänsä ja miettimään minkä värinen tämän iho, hiukset ja silmät ovat? Onko heillä kenties hiuksissaan jotain, kuten pampula tai pinni? Millainen ilme heillä on; ovatko he iloisia, surullisia tai kenties jotakin muuta? (Tässä vaiheessa toki heidän ikkunan toisella puolella istuva ystävänsä on jo näyttänyt kaikki mahdolliset ilmeet, nuollut ikkunaa ja piirrellyt sormella kaikenlaisia kuvia siihen).  Kun maalaaja päättää tarkastelleensa tarpeeksi, ohjaa häntä aloittamaan maalauksensa. Hurmaavaa on huomata kuinka myös mallina istuva lapsi tässä vaiheessa rauhoittuu ja alkaa jokseenkin jopa nauttimaan mallina olosta. He seuraavat ystävänsä maalaamista haltioituneina ja hurraavat heidän hienosti etenevää työtään. Koska malli-lapsi on tässä ikkunan toisella puolella, ei maalaaja-lapsi kuule kaikkia heidän ohjeitaan järin tarkasti, joten jokainen pääsee keskittymään työhönsä.

Corduroy craft and Button Hunt

Corduroy books are lovely, the one we read for this is titled just “Corduroy”. In the story he is in the toy store and loses his button which is sewn on by his new friend at the end of the story. So we decided to try to replicate this.

The aim of this craft is to follow instructions. In general I prefer open ended crafts where the children can create their own artwork. Every now and then I make one of these where all the pieces are prepared and the focus is on following instructions and sequencing the craft as advised. There are still items and choices the kids get to make independently, like the colours and size of eyes. It’s good practise even for the little ones to have experience of this too. The equivalent for us adults would be like building ikea furniture, but with verbal instructions 🙂 

You need: 

  • The pieces cut from cardstock: Bear body, dungarees, muzzle and a pocket (the pocket is optional) 
  • Googly eyes, I offered two sizes
  • Pompom for nose
  • Glue stick
  • Liquid glue

I start this craft by making an example, and as I do that I explain what all the pieces are. I place the bear part card pieces on one side table and ask the children to pick up one of each and a glue stick. These parts should be glued together with the glue stick. 1. Dungarees on the bear 2. Pocket on dungarees (optional) 3. Muzzle on the face.

When this is finished I guide them to the next side table where they can return their glue stick and then pick up eyes and a nose. These should be glued on with the liquid glue (which I put on their table). Cotton swabs are easy to use with the liquid glue and the small items we have. I guide the kids to use cotton swab for the eyes and to dip the pompom in the glue to then stick on for Corduroy. 

The last thing to do is to add the buttons for the suspenders. But where are the buttons…? Hidden all around the classroom! As soon as a child has glued on their bits and pieces, I go and whisper to them that they should go and find two buttons for Corduroy. They find it soo exciting to roam around the classroom to find the buttons! When they do, they glue the buttons on with the liquid glue. 

Such fun! 

Nalle askartelu ja Nappijahti

Tätä askartelua ennen luimme kirjan Corduroysta, nallesta joka etsii nappiaan ja löytää uuden ystävän. Suomeksi tätä ei taida löytyä käännettynä, mutta tätä askartelua varten voisi lukea vaikka Rasmus-Nallen seikkailuista. 

Itse suosin useimmiten askarteluja joissa lapsi voi itse päättää toteutuksen ja käyttää omaa taiteellista luovuuttaan. Silloin tällöin on hyvä harjoitella myös ohjeiden seurausta. Meille aikuisille vastaava toiminta olisi esimerkiksi ikea huonekalun kokoaminen annettujen ohjeiden mukaan 😀 

Tarvitset: 

  • Kartongista leikatut osat: Nalle, housut, tasku ja kuono
  • Silmät
  • Pompom nenä
  • Liimapuikko
  • Nestemäinen liima
  • Vanupuikkoja
  • Nappeja

Leikkasin lapsille kaikki palaset valmiiksi ja näytin heille esimerkin: valitse osat pöydältä 1., yksi kutakin sekä liimapuikko. Liimaa housut nallen vartaloon, sitten tasku (valinnainen) ja lopuksi kuono. Palauta sitten liimapuikko pöydälle 2. ja valitse silmät sekä pompom nenäksi. Tässä vaiheessa laitoin nestemäisen liiman pöydälle vanupuikkojen kanssa (vanupuikko on pienille osille sopivan kokoinen työkalu). Liimaa silmät ja nenä. 

Ennen askartelua olin ‘piilottanut’ nappeja ympäri luokkahuonetta. Kun lapsi kerrallaan oli saanut nallensa tähän pisteeseen valmiiksi kuiskasin heille että vielä pitäisi löytää jotakin niihin housuihin. Mitäs Corduroy kadottikaan? Napin! Kerroin lapsille että nappeja on jokapuolella ja kehotin heitä etsimään kaksi. Voi sitä iloa lasten kirmaillessa ympäri luokkaa ‘jahtaamassa’ nappeja. Kun napit löytyivät, he liimasivat ne vielä nallen housuihin. 

Ja kas miten hienoja luomuksia saimmekaan!

Aurinkosieppari

Ystävänpäivän kunniaksi teimme sydän aurinkosiepparit. Tämä vaatii aikuiselta melko paljon valmistelua, mutta on lapselle hyvää hienomotorista harjoitusta ja on valmiina varsin näyttävä.

Tarvitset:

  • A4 kartonkeja
  • Kirkas kontaktimuovi
  • Silkkipaperia
  • Värikästä sellofaania
  • Sakset

Leikkaa A4 kartonkiin sydän aukko keskelle. Kiinnitä sitten koko paperin kokoinen kontaktimuovi toiselle puolelle. Asettele materiaalit pöydälle ja anna lapsen luoda haluamansa kuvio tahmaiseen kontaktimuoviin.

Annoimme lapsille valmiiksi silputtua värikästä sellofaania sekä silkkipaperiarkkeja. Hienomotoriikan harjoittamista varten pyysimme lapsia repimään silkkipaperista pienempiä paloja joita kiinnittää aurinkosieppariin.

Toteutus oli helppo useammankin lapsen kanssa. Työ ei vaadi yksityiskohtia, joten lapsia voi kutsua pöydän ympärille useamman samaan aikaan. Meillä on kaksi ryhmää samassa kerroksessa, joten pöydän ympärillä oli samanaikaisesti 10-12 lasta.

Tämän askartelun valmistelu oli jokseenkin aikaa vievää, lähinnä kontaktimuovin tahmaisuuden takia. Lopputulos on kuitenkin sen verran näyttävä, että esityö oli toki kannattavaa.

Siivousvinkki sellofaanille: sellofaanilla on ikävä taipumus kerätä staattista sähköisyyttä jolloin se tarttuu kaikkialle ja kaikkeen. Kostuttamalla talouspaperia, saat pyyhittyä ylijäämäpalaset helposti pois.

Aurinkoista säätä odotellessa…

Bonus:

Edellisestä askartelusta jäi jäljelle kartongin keskeltä leikattu sydän. Päätimme maalata sydämet vanupuikoilla ja askartelumaalilla.

Vanupuikot ovat hauska vaihtoehto pensselille, koska ne ovat pienempiä ja niillä voi sekä maalata että raaputtaa. Vanupuikolla on helppo luoda kuvioita pienemmällekin paperille ja kun maalia on kerrostunut paperille tarpeeksi, voi vanupuikolla ‘raapustaa’ siihen lisää kuvioita.

Sydämellistä karkeamotoriikkaa

Tarvitset:

  • Erivärisiä paperisydämiä
  • Kontaktimuovia
  • Sydäntilpehöörejä, tai muita saatavilla olevia pikku esineitä, minulla sattui olemaan pehmeitä tarroja
  • Varsiharja tai lätkämaila, golfmaila, muu millä voi siirrellä pieniä esineitä paperisydämille

Kiinnitä sydämet lattiaan kontaktimuovilla (tai kirkkaalla teipillä). Kontaktimuovia käyttämällä saat sileän pinnan jonka yli on helppo harjata pikku sydämiä isoille sydämille.

Kaikki lapset istuivat huoneen laidalla katselemassa ja hurraamassa ystäviään. Ensin nimesimme kaikki värit ja pohdimme mitkä sydämistä mahtavat kuulua yhteen? Seuraavaksi pyysin lapsia kaksi kerrallaan ottamaan varsiharjan ja harjaamaan yhden pienen sydämen kerrallaan saman väriselle isolle sydämelle. Asennot olivat jos jonkinlaisia, mutta yhdessä havaitsimme että on järkevää käyttää molempia käsiä hieman erillään toisistaan. Välillä laskimme kuinka monta sydäntä millekin värille on päätynyt ja jatkoimme taas sydämien siirtelyä.

Jätin sydämet luokan lattiaan ja hiukan myöhemmin lapset keksivät jo omia leikkejään ja pelejään niillä. Parhainta on villinä laukkaava mielikuvitus! ❤ ❤ ❤

Sydän laskentoa

Tarvitset:

  • Viisi kortti sydäntä
  • Kirjoita numerot 1-5 kortteihin
  • Toiselle puolelle tee pisteet, esimerkiksi kuin nopassa
  • Sydäntilpehöörejä tai muita pieniä esineitä joita voi laittaa korteille

Tämä on paras toiminta toteuttaa matolla isommankin ryhmän kanssa. Minulla oli 11 enimmäkseen nelivuotiaita lapsia matolla samaan aikaan. Olen ottanut tavaksi laittaa suuren kartongin ‘pöydäksi’ keskelle mattoa jonka ympärille pyydän lapset istumaan. Kartonki luo hyvän rajan joka on lapselle helppo havaita ja kunnioittaa.

Aloitimme laskemalla numerot 1-5. Kun kortit oli laitettu pöydälle, varmistimme vielä että nimesimme kaikki numerot oikein. Sitten käänsimme kortit pistepuoli ylöspäin ja laskimme vielä kaikki pisteet.

Aloitimme pistepuolella, koska se on lapsille helpompi ymmärtää. Minulla oli sydän tarroja kulhossa jonka annoin ensimmäiselle lapselle vasemmalla puolellani ja pyysin häntä ottamaan yhden ja pistämään sitten kulhon kiertämään (hyvää harjoitusta vuoron odottamisesta ja jakamisesta). Pyysin sitten jokaista lasta laittamaan sydämensä haluamalleen pisteelle vuorotelleen. Tavoitteena oli ‘täyttää sydän’.

Ensimmäinen kierros meni ihan hyvin kun lapset ihmettelivät vielä notta mistähän on kyse. Toisella kierroksella, hyvin harjoitelleena, lapset huomioivat paljon enemmän kuinka täynnä sydämet ovat ja mihin he sijoittaisivat sydämensä. Kolmannella kierroksella kokemuksesta rohkaistuneina lapset halusivat kokeilla “vaikeampaa” puolta. Käänsimme siis numerot esille ja ryhdyimme täyttämään sydämiä. Oli mahtavaa huomata kuinka huomaavaisia ja tarkkaavaisia lapset olivat. Kierros kulki hitaammin koska he laskivat tarkasti kuinka monta sydäntä kortilla jo on, muistelivat mikäs numero olikaan kyseessä ja saivat opettajansa varsin onnelliseksi keskittymiskyvyllään!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Paper Mache interactive toy

My dear colleague some years ago suggested that we should make something interactive about the caterpillar. The result of that idea was this lovely paper mache caterpillar that can be played with and fed as we read the story. 

You need: 

  • A “sausage” balloon 
  • Newspaper 
  • Glue
  • Paints ; greens, yellow, red, black, purple
  • Pipe cleaners 
  • Hot glue

Use your favourite paper mache technique. There’s one you can do with a blender, some you soak for overnight etc. For this one I simply mixed glue and water and dipped newspaper strips into it. It helps to make the form and attaches around the balloon nicely. Cover the balloon in paper mache but leave a hole for the mouth. After the paper had dried (this one took about 24hrs) I cut the mouth opening a bit bigger and tidier and then painted the whole thing. I decided to stay faithful to the original Eric Carle design with painting so I used similar colours and mixing as in the book. Once the paint was dry I attached the pipe cleaner feet and antennas with hot glue, they’ve stayed in place for at least 5 years, so I can only highly recommend hot glue 😉 )

Finally I printed all the food items from the story, cut and laminated them so that they can be fed to The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
